VU WRFL NETBALL BEGINS

THE Victoria University WRFL Netball Competition got off to a flying start on Friday night, with 12 teams going head-to-head in the opening round of the inaugural competition.

Supporters of each of the 12 teams packed the VU Sports Stadium at Whitten Oval for the historic night.

Point Cook Blue announced themselves as an early front runner, scoring a 62 to 7 win over Braybrook Black.

The 55 goal win put Point Cook Blue at the top of the ladder and gave them an incredible percentage, 885%.

The North Footscray Devils fought off a determined Albion team in Round 1.

It was a fast paced game, with quick ball movement for both sides.

The two teams were evenly matched in the early stages of the first half, before North Footscray broke away to score a 12 goal win.

The final score was 39 to 27.

Braybrook Red also scored an important win in the opening round of the season.

Braybrook defeated Sunshine by six goals.

Sunshine mounted a spirited fightback in the third quarter, but Braybrook had all the answers, scoring a 29 to 23 win.

Spotswood also scored a win over the North Footscray Red Devils.

From the first whistle, Spotswood controlled the tempo of the match and proved too strong for their opponents.

The final score was 47 to 26. The win put them in third position on the ladder.

Caroline Springs also put in a great defensive performance in their match with Albion Cattaz. The Lakers restricted their opponents to just 11 goals for the match. The final score 27 to 11.

In the final match of the Round Point Cook Red defeated Glen Orden by three goals in a highly entertaining game.

Only a few goals separated the two sides for most of the match, with Point Cook Red doing enough to win. The final score was 39 to 36.
