ONE JOB AT A TIME FOR THE SHARKS

Point Cook Centrals coach Leanne Meyer says her team is focused on finishing job one – the home and away season – before looking ahead to job two – the Victoria University Polytechnic Senior Women’s Division 2 finals.

The Sharks have had an impressive season to date, they currently sit in top spot on the ladder, one game clear of West Footscray. They also boast a percentage of 1474%.

Meyer said she was proud of how the team was tracking.

“It has been of a stop-start season for us due to the crazy climate we are still living in, so it has been a challenge to keep the team motivated, but the girls have been great at motivating each other,” she said.

“It isn’t just me, it’s all of them and they are sticking together. It is nice to see what we have built over the past few years come together.

“We are getting to the pointy end – I do wish we can play a few more games this season – but we are focusing on two different events. We are working to finish off the season first and then shifting our focus to finals.”

Meyer said when her players step on the field they know they have a responsibility to wear the jumper with pride and that 80 minutes of their best effort is required week-in-week-out.

“When they get on the field, they know not to leave anything in the tank” she said.

“If you come off the ground and you know you haven’t done your best than you have to be self aware of that and hold yourself accountable, but I couldn’t be prouder of the effort the team has put in.”

With the addition of some new players last season and again this year, Meyer is conscious of not overwhelming the team with the thought of finals and the potential of winning a premiership.

“With a big influx of new players, we aren’t trying to overcomplicate things, just focus on the 80 minutes of game time,” she said.

“Finals is an exciting time and we have reminded the playing group of how fun playing finals will be with 22 of your best mates, but we aren’t there yet. We see the season as job one and finals as job two.”
