WRFL SAYS NO TO SPORTS BETTING

Community clubs across the state will this weekend show their support for playing footy without the intrusion of sports betting by participating in the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation’s Love the Game round.

More than 400 sporting clubs, including Victoria’s 10 AFL teams, 23 leagues and commissions, and community clubs are signed-up members of the Love the Game program, demonstrating to young people that sport and betting do not need to go together.

The Western Region Football League has a Love the Game, Not the Odds feature game on Sunday. It features Newport Power Football Club and Yarraville Seddon Eagles in the SEDA Under 16 Division 2 match.

WRFL CEO Matthew Duck said it was important to show kids the real value of participation and play, and to encourage them to enjoy footy for its own sake, not because any money has been risked on the outcome.

“While sports betting advertising is widespread, we need to remember that it is the great goals, spectacular marks and team spirit that make our national game special,” he said.

The WRFL is proud to say ‘no’ to sports betting sponsorship, and along with our clubs encourage kids to love the game, not the odds.

“Whether you’re a parent or a coach or a supporter, it’s important to talk openly with kids about the risks of gambling,” Mr Duck said.

For hints and tips on how to start the conversation, Foundation Chief Executive Officer Shane Lucas invited people to visit http://www.lovethegame.vic.gov.au.

“Sports betting advertising encourages kids to think betting on sport is normal. And when something is normalised, it can seem like there’s no risk involved,” Mr Lucas said.

Love the Game helps raise awareness of the risks associated with gambling, especially in relation to sport, and encourages all of us to rethink gambling.

“We believe this engaging and fun program will help kids make better informed choices about gambling throughout their lives.”

The Love the Game round will take place from 27 June to 30 June.
