During the pre-season training is held on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Hanmer Reserve, Yarraville, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at MacKillop College, Werribee. All training sessions commence at 5.45pm, and you only need to attend one of these venues, one-two times per week.
Once the WRFL season starts in April the training venues and nights switch (so become Mon/Wed at MacKillop and Tue/Thu at Hanmer). To receive email updates on training (and all WRFL Umpire information) you need to register online (see below). You can also click here to view current training schedules.
To register as an umpire with the WRFL in season 2020 you will need to complete the online registration form and return an ATO Statement by Supplier form – for more information on registering please click here.
First year junior umpires are provided with an on-field uniform at no cost – this will consist of the following:
Field Umpire – t-shirt, shorts, socks, whistle
Goal Umpire – t-shirt, pants, jacket, cap
Other uniform items are available to purchase. We are currently updating our Uniform ordering process, you will receive more information on this during the pre-season.
During pre-season training your coach/es will liaise with you on the type/age level/division of umpiring you are interested in/suited for. Developing umpires may be paired with a Mentor to guide them through their first matches. Each week during the season the coaches complete the match appointments online in Schedula, the online appointment software.
Upon registering as a WRFL Umpire you will receive an email inviting you to set up your Schedula account. There you can set up your availability for the whole season and/or week to week – if you will be playing football as well as umpiring you can set your availability so that you are able to be appointed to matches that are scheduled before or after your own.
During the season the match appointments are released weekly on a Wednesday at 12 noon, with umpires required to accept or reject their appointment online.
Please complete the online registration, you will then receive email updates from the WRFL Umpires Director (head coach) Mark Westgarth regarding training and other information. You can then head along to a training session to speak with the coaches and get a feel for what umpiring in the WRFL will be like.
