POINT COOK WIN VU WRFL NETBALL TITLE

Point Cook were crowned champions of the Victoria University WRFL Netball Competition on Friday night, defeating Braybrook by 34 goals.

The Bulldogs, who were the red-hot favourites to claim the inaugural title, got off to a fast start in the Grand Final, scoring 10 goals to the 3 in the opening quarter.

Point Cook were far too strong in the second term, scoring 17 goals and extending their lead by 21 goals.

Shooting duo Jenna Goricanec and Holly Ellul were in great touch and proved to be unstoppable in the goal ring.

The duo have combined well all season, with Point Cook averaging almost 50 goals a game.

Braybrook battled hard and had to make positional changes due to injuries and player unavailability and ultimately couldn’t match it with Point Cook across the four quarters.

The Bulldogs scored nine goals in the third quarter and kept the Brookers to just two goals.

Defenders Jane Goodier and Joanne Crozier played well, their defensive pressure and ability to rebound from the defensive third was pivotal.

It was more of the same in the final quarter, with Point Cook outscoring Braybrook 11 to 5.

The final score was 47 to 13.

Point Cook’s star goal shooter Jenna Goricanec was named Best on Court, having shot 34 of her team’s 47 goals.

Point Cook coach Nicole Case said her team, most of which have never played together before this season, had become her second family.

She said she was proud of the groups efforts in the WRFL’s inaugural netball season.
