PHYSIOPLUS CELEBRATES WORLD PHYSIO DAY

Each year, on 8 September, Physiotherapists from Melbourne and around the world celebrate World Physiotherapy Daya global event recognising the incredible role physiotherapists play in the community and the relationships they have with their patients.

The message from the profession’s global body, the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), is “Physical therapy for mental health”. Across the world people are simply not active enough.

Exercise is an evidence-based treatment depression and mental health issues – so inactivity has significant health consequences for individuals and for our society.

Melbourne is currently ranked 5th on the Heart Foundation’s national “Couch Potato Index” for high prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity.

However, it needn’t be like that, says local Sports Physiotherapist Michael Ranger.

“Physiotherapists have a crucial role in keeping people active, well and independent, which ultimately leads to better mental health and increased quality of life.”

“Everyone needs to be active, and we’re always happy to find the best way to keep you moving,” said Michael Ranger.

Australian physiotherapists conduct over 23 million consultations each year.

On World Physiotherapy Day, we promote awareness of the benefits of physiotherapy in the prevention, maintenance and treatment of injuries to ensure all Australians can get the most out of their life.

Local physiotherapist Monique Rowlands says, “We specialise in human movement, identifying factors that prevent people from being as active and independent as they can be, and then find ways of overcoming them through rehabilitation, science-based exercise prescription, and promotion of physical activity.”

“It is extremely rewarding to help keep people health and living to their full potential.” said Monique Rowlands.
